Chapter 1 · Front Chapter 4

Interlude 1 — Let's Make Sure He Belongs Only to Us

間話1 絶対私達だけのものにしようね

That day, my sister and I got caught in a random stabbing, and frankly, it wouldn’t have been at all strange if we’d been killed. With death right there in front of us and our pasts beginning to flicker by like a running highlight reel, both of us genuinely believed our lives were going to end then and there.

But we were saved. By an unremarkable boy in our year — Yagami Ryouya. There were plenty of other people around at that moment, but the only one who actually moved to help Riona and me was him.

And Yagami-kun went so far as to sacrifice himself to protect us. Anyone who could see that and not fall in love with him would have to be something other than human.

Up until now in my life, plenty of people have fallen for me — but I’d never fallen for anyone. So I’d never had a boyfriend, and to be honest, I’d never even particularly wanted one.

Now, though, I want Yagami-kun more than anything I have ever wanted in my life — from the deepest, most genuine part of me. I’ve always had a stronger possessive streak than most people, so I want him only for me. No one else gets to lay even a single finger on him.

The one and only exception in the entire world is my twin sister Riona. Riona and I were originally a single fertilized egg that split in two. That’s how we ended up in this world.

So in a real sense, Riona and I were one to start with — two halves of the same self. What’s Riona’s is mine, and what’s mine is Riona’s. That’s just how it is.

And being identical twins, our preferences run very much in parallel. Which means Riona, exactly like me, has fallen for Yagami-kun completely.

“Is the remote-monitoring app working?”

“Working fine.”

“Good. Now if any little pests try to get close to him, we can head them off.”

I’d come home after leaving Yagami-kun’s hospital room, and Riona and I were having this little chat. When we put our contacts into his phone earlier, Riona slipped the app in.

The remote-monitoring app lets you discreetly view a phone’s email, SMS, LIME messages, and web browsing history. It’s actually intended for parents watching over their kids and for anti-theft. We’re going to use it for slightly less innocent purposes.

The app also has a feature to hide itself from the home screen, which neatly takes care of the concealment side. But it does have one drawback: it has to run in the background at all times, which makes the phone feel sluggish and burn through the battery faster than normal. Then again, Yagami-kun’s phone is on the older side, so he’ll probably just chalk it up to a worn-out battery.

“By the way — he’s currently searching online for ‘exchanging contact info with a girl, dating possibility.’ Looks like he’s hoping he could date us.”

“Ah, so he is a healthy boy after all.”

Needless to say, both Riona and I fully intend to date Yagami-kun. More than that, we’re not going to allow him to date any girl who isn’t one of us.

“Let’s make sure he belongs only to us.”

“Mm. He doesn’t get handed to anyone else.”

For now, we’ll keep visiting him every day, starting tomorrow — getting close to him is the first step. He didn’t seem opposed to the visits at all, and as long as we keep coming under the cover of “checking in on the patient,” we can keep narrowing the distance between us.
